Following the news that Hurricane Irma has been upgraded to a category 5, we here at Alpha Travel Insurance would like to clarify the cover available to our policyholders.
We always advise that traveller check the FCO's advice for destinations they intend to travel to, and all the current advice can be found here:
For residents of Ireland, the advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade are here:
This type of event is unfortunately not covered across the travel insurance industry for claims relating to cancellation or curtailment. This is due to the majority of policies having the following exclusion clause with regards to cancellation or curtailment: "any claim where the flood, fire, earthquake, storm, lightning, explosion, hurricane or infectious disease had already happened before you left home"
If your travel and accommodation arrangements have been altered due to the storm, your policy could cover some reasonable costs to provide you with alternative travel and accommodation options within a certain radius of your original. To find out more information, please contact the claims team on: firstname.lastname@example.org or for more information see here.
If you can't amend your travel and trip details, and have a medical reason for doing so, get in touch to discuss your situation on an individual basis.
If you have any further questions, queries or general concerns, please contact us on email@example.com. We’re happy to help!
