Holidays are finally back on! This means you can start booking up those much-needed trips and begin travelling again. Let’s welcome back the days of spending quality time with friends and family, updating Instagram with your latest snaps and adding stamps to your passport.

Before you head off, it’s important that you take out travel insurance which includes coronavirus cover. We’re living in uncertain times and you never know what could happen tomorrow, let alone in a week or a month.

All our policies offer COVID- 19 protection including; cancellation cover if you’re made redundant or test positive for coronavirus before you go away, and emergency medical cover if you fall ill abroad and need treatment or have to be bought home early. Is enhanced Coronavirus cover available for domestic trips?

If you are travelling on a well-deserved staycation you will find comfort knowing Alpha offers specialist UK holiday cover on our “Staycation Plus” policies. Our staycation product includes enhanced cover for coronavirus that offers additional benefits which are tailored to domestic travel, including:

  • Cancellation cover if you or anyone named on your policy test positive for Covid-19, up to 14 days before you are due to travel.
  • Cover for denied boarding on domestic flights as a result of showing symptoms of covid-19.
  • Cover to come home early from your trip as a result of getting coronavirus.
  • 24/7 access to a UK based GP at any time during your trip.

Which Countries can you travel to?

At the time of writing this the following countries were on the green list, but the Government will be reviewing every three weeks. For an up to date list, click here.

Countries can be added or taken off the green list with less than three weeks notice, if they are seen as unsafe to visit.

What about any changes in relation to travel?

It is important to note that our travel insurance policies will only be valid if the FCDO has marked your destination as safe to visit. Before booking your holiday and travel insurance it is recommended that you check the latest FCDO advice to ensure that your destination is marked as safe.

Here are our top tips for staying up to date on the ever-changing pandemic situation:

  • Keep an eye on the latest travel news in relation to your holiday destination.
  • Read the government’s guidance on safer air travel.
  • Purchase travel insurance as soon as you pay any money towards your trip (i.e. booking flights or accommodation).
  • Keep up to date with the FCDO’s advice on your destination.
  • Adhere to social distancing and hygiene protection methods.
  • Wear facial protection on airlines.

If I am taken ill whilst abroad due to Coronavirus, will I be covered?

Yes, you or anyone named on your policy will be covered with any of our Alpha products for any emergency and necessary emergency medical treatment, including repatriation, as a result of Coronavirus.

Your policy will also cover you for all other emergency medical treatment abroad as per the terms and conditions of the policy.

As of 12th November, all Alpha policies will provide cover if you have to cancel your trip due to contracting coronavirus. You will also have denied boarding cover if you and anyone named on the policy are prevented entry at the airport on your inbound flight due to showing symptoms of COVID-19.

If I need to cancel my trip due to coronavirus will I be covered?

From 14th March 2020 – 11th November 2020 all Alpha’s products excluded cover for cancellation claims due to COVID-19.

As of 1st November, all Alpha Single or Multi Trips policies (excluding Winter Sports) will provide cover if you have to cancel your trip due to testing positive for COVID-19 up to 14 days prior to travelling.

As of 12th November, all Alpha Winter Sports and Longstay policies will also provide cover if you have to cancel your trip due to testing positive for COVID-19 up to 14 days prior to travelling.

Alternatively, if you are unable to travel and you haven’t made a claim or travelled on the policy, you could be entitled to a partial or pro-rata refund if you were to cancel it. For more information about this please click here.

My airline or tour operator have cancelled my holiday, am I able to claim?

If your airline or tour operator has cancelled your booking, it is their responsibility to either change your dates or offer you a full refund. Which? has provided some great advice on seeking refunds here.

From the 1st November 2020, Alpha customers who purchase a Single or Multi Trip policy (excluding Winter Sports) will be covered if their airline goes into administration due to the pandemic.

From the 12th November 2020, Alpha customers who purchase a Winter Sports or Longstay policy will be covered if their airline goes into administration due to the pandemic.

My airline or tour operator have changed my travel dates, can I change my insurance?

Yes, no problem! If you have a Single Trip policy, you can move your travel dates online. Please click here.

Please note: There may be an increased cost to your policy if you are extending the duration, changing the geographical destination or moving your dates more than 12 months from the original date of purchase.

How much is coronavirus travel insurance?

The price of a travel insurance policy depends on a number of things; where you’re going, how many people are on the policy, how long you’re away for and what level of cover you’re after. All our policies offer coronavirus cover as standard and include protection both before you travel and while you’re away. It is available for both a Single and Multi-Trip policies and includes cover for the following:

  • If you’re denied boarding at the airport due to detected symptoms of coronavirus
  • If you show symptoms of COVID-19 whilst on your trip and must self-isolate in your accommodation and you would like to claim for cancelled excursions  
  • If you fall ill with COVID-19 abroad and need to be repatriated to the UK
  • If your airline goes into administration due to the pandemic
  • If you have been made redundant and cannot afford to travel anymore
  • If you test positive for COVID-19 and are unable to travel

I've tested positive for coronavirus and I'm meant to be going on holiday, am I covered?

If you test positive for coronavirus up 14 days prior to travelling and need to cancel your holiday, then yes, we can cover you - as long as you have purchased a Single or Multi-Trip from 12th November 2020 onwards.  

All we’ll need from you is confirmation of a positive test result and no symptoms or diagnosis prior to purchasing your policy.

Can I get travel insurance with coronavirus cover if I'm already away?

You should always take out travel insurance as soon as your trip is booked to ensure you’re protected, not only once you’re away but also before you go. If you are already away, then you would not be able to take out a travel insurance policy with us.

Your best bet, if you are someone that forgets to take out travel insurance, is to take out a Multi-Trip policy. You only have to get one of these a year and it covers you for an unlimited number of trips. This means you won’t find yourself on holiday without travel insurance again – it’s a win win situation!

If I am stuck abroad & cannot return home - will my travel insurance be extended?

If you are stuck abroad due to coronavirus and cannot return home on your planned date, cover may be extended for the following reasons:

  • If you are hospitalised, require medical treatment and are unable to fly.
  • If your transport is disrupted or delayed.
  • If you cannot return home for any reason beyond your control

£1,500 - Personal Possessions

If you’re anything like us, then you buy a whole new wardrobe every time you go on holiday, plus all the essentials like straighteners, chargers, cosmetics, those fancy sunnies you bought in duty free last yer, the list goes on. This is why all of our Alpha policies come with £1,500 Personal Possessions cover, in case they get lost, stolen or damaged on your trip. We even include some £ for the purchase of essential items if your luggage is delayed reaching you on your trip! Check out your policy wordings for all the info.

£1,250 - Cancellation

Holidays can be pretty pricey at times, so if you have to cancel for reasons outside of your control, like a medical emergency, you’ll need to have the correct cancellation cover in place. Alpha understand this, and we don’t want you to be less a holiday AND your hard-earned and saved up cash; this is why we have £1,250 cancellation cover per insured person in our policies. Single Trip travel insurance is ideal for a range of holidays; whether you’re heading off for a quick city break, or a full-on two week sunshine holiday.

With the Alpha Single Trip policy there is no upper age limit, cover for 100+ activities is available and trips can be from as little as 3 days up to 94.

Cover includes cancellation, emergency medical expenses, personal possessions, and legal expenses.

 

Please note that our policies must be purchased for trips starting and ending within the UK, and will not be valid if you have already begun your trip or are already abroad. Our insurance policies are also currently unable to cover for cruise holidays on this policy unless you have purchased our cruise extension.
