Portrayed through films as one of the world's most romantic destinations, Paris is a popular choice among love-struck couples. Paris is renowned for its iconic hotspots including the Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe, alongside an array of padlock adorned bridges; it is these bridges that are the centre of controversy in a new campaign.
The No Love Locks campaign was created in February two ex-Paris residents who now live in America. The campaign has already generated over 1,700 signatures of support against the amount of locks being attached to various bridges across Paris. The idea of this is that couples who visit Paris write their initials on a lock, attach it to the bridge and then throw the key into the river below; the ideology is that their love is unbreakable just like the lock.
This tourist trend originally started on the Pont des Arts and Pont de l'Archevéªché, however it has now spread to nearly all of the bridges along the entire stretch of the Seine river. Although estimated at 7000,000 padlocks, there is a growing concern that the sheer weight of the metal could be putting the bridge's structure at risk and result in permanent damage or even collapse.
The No Love Locks campaign has generated mixed views about the padlocked bridges; some believe they are an eyesore and pose health and safety risks, whereas others believe it is just a bit of fun and part of the overall Paris experience. Decorated with padlock of all shapes and sizes, many believe that these bridges are iconic and hold many memories should the person wish to return to the bridge one day and re-find their lock. Street vendors are regularly seen selling padlocks and marker pens located next to the bridges.
