Earlier this week I decided to grab my paddle and head out on the river for a spot of canoeing! (See if you can spot me in the photo!) Canoeing is great fun and it is especially pleasant paddling up and down the river in the Summer sunshine! It was my first time and definitely something I'd love to try again! Here's why you should give it a go too!
What equipment do I need?
Lightweight clothes that dry easily are a must as well as suitable lightweight shoes (preferably ones that float!) Shoes must be worn as they protect your feet from the bottom of the riverbed in case you fall in.
Don't forget to bring a towel and a spare change of clothes!
All other equipment is usually provided although you are welcome to bring your own:
Do I have to be physically fit?
A basic amount of physical fitness is required to canoe, although you can put in as much or as little effort as you like with regards to how fast you want to paddle. Although, it is essential that you are a confident swimmer as chances are you will end up in the water!
Is it easy to learn?
Definitely! Once you master the initial technique of getting in the boat you can be paddling down the river confidently in less than five minutes.
Being able to paddle in a straight line though takes a bit of work (I kept over-paddling and going round in circles!) however it is just a case of getting your paddle strokes correct. I got there eventually!
What else did you do whilst canoeing?
We had around 30 minutes of learning to paddle up and down the river. After that, we were given the task of trying to hold the boats together whilst another person had to walk up and down them without falling in the water. It was a bit tricky to do and lots of people ended up going in and getting very wet!
Canoeing sounds fun! Where can I learn it?
I learnt how to canoe with my local Canoe Club, so this is a good place to start alongside seeking out specialist canoe centres. These are widespread across the UK so it should be easy to find one that is at a convenient location to you.
If you would also like to learn how to canoe, it is important to take out an adequate level of travel insurance for this activity. Alpha Travel Insurance can provide cover for canoeing and many other water based activities, please take a look at our activity pack lists.
