Following the reports of Cyclone Debbie that is due to affect Queensland Australia, we here at Alpha Travel Insurance would like to clarify our position.
We always advise travellers to check current advice from the FCO’s with regards to their chosen destination. This can be found here – https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/australia.
For residents of Ireland, please follow the advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, found here: https://www.dfa.ie/travel/travel-advice/a-z-list-of-countries/australia/.
Unfortunately, this type of event is not covered across the travel insurance industry for claims that relate to curtailment or cancellation; this is due to the majority of policies having the following exclusions with regards to cancellation and curtailment: 'any claim where the fire, flood, earthquake, storm, lightning, explosion, hurricane or infectious disease had already happened before you left home'.
If your travel and/or accommodation arrangements have been affected by the storm, your policy may cover some additional costs. These must be 'reasonable' to provide you with alternative travel and accommodation options within a certain radius. For more information on this, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you cannot amend the details of your trip and have a medical reason for returning home early, we will happily discuss your case on an individual basis; so please get in touch with email@example.com.
If you have any further questions, queries or general concerns, please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org. We’re happy to help!
