With the Summer months finally here, it is the perfect time to start a new sports activity! Although playing sports such as football or rugby in the Summer heat may leave you feeling hotter than before, instead why not try learning a water sport - perfect to cool down and enjoy while the weather's warm!
In this post we introduce you to the fun and fast-paced sport, water polo.
What is it?
Water polo is an exciting combination of swimming and basketball, mixed with the physical contact of rugby. It is a fun and adventurous sport that can be enjoyed by those of all ages.
Similar to football, two goals are placed at either ends of the pool and players are divided in to teams. The team scores points for every goal they score against the opposing team.
Players can score either by throwing the ball to their teammates or swimming with the ball in front of them. They are only allowed to use one hand, unlike the goalkeeper who is allowed to use both.
Players are not allowed to let their feet touch the bottom of the pool at any time, the only player who is allowed to do this is the goalkeeper.
What equipment do I need?
The great thing about water polo is that you probably already have all the things you need to get started!
If you're joining with an existing club or team, they will already have the following additional equipment.
How long will it take to learn?
If you're a complete beginner, it will take a short time to learn the basic rules of the game. However, once you have this mastered, playing is relatively straight forward and won't take you long to learn!
However, it is important that you have strong swimming skills are fit and healthy to play. This is because the sport is tough and physically demanding.
Where can I learn it?
Your local pool! Simply locate the local swimming pools are in your area and enquire about water polo clubs. Some also offer taster sessions which are great if you'd like to give it a go before you sign up to the club!
