Longstay travel insurance policy informationGet a quote

If you are looking for affordable longstay travel insurance, or backpacker travel insurance, the Alpha range of travel insurance policies is perfect for you.

If you are intending to take part on a sports activity on your trip, take a look at the Longstay trip activity pack list to check which pack you will need to purchase for your chosen activity.

We offer a choice of policies to suit your budget, but unlike our competitors we do not reduce our premiums by taking out essential elements of the cover. All Alpha Longstay policies provide the same levels of cover – however in order to provide a choice of premiums we give you the option to decide how much you would like to contribute towards a claim; the higher your choice of excess, the lower your premium.

With a choice of £250, £150, £100, £60, £50 or £0 excess, the appropriately named Alpha 250, Alpha 150, Alpha 100, Alpha 60, Alpha 50 and Alpha Zero longstay and backpacker travel insurance policies are ideal if you are planning:

  • A gap year - Gap years are great if you’re looking to experience what the world has to offer in between your studies or looking for a job;
  • To work abroad - The Longstay policy is perfect if you’re planning to teach English in China or fancy trying your hand as a surf instructor in Australia;
  • To travel the world - Got more than one destination on your bucket list? Choose a Worldwide policy and enjoy the freedom of visiting anywhere in the world;
  • To find the perfect adrenaline rush - We cover a wide range of sporting and adventure activities from sky diving to snorkeling, hang gliding to snowboarding – all the more reason to give it a go;
  • To study - Studying abroad is a great way to improve your CV, gaining valuable experience while simultaneously learning about different cultures;
  • An extended holiday - Not sure of your return date and not booked a flight? The Longstay policy has a variety of flexible options, including the ability to choose your return home date at a later stage;
Whatever the purpose of your trip, Alpha Travel Insurance provides the essential cover that will give you complete peace of mind whilst travelling. All of our Longstay policies provide:
  • A choice of policy excess;

Single trip info

As you would expect, Alpha single trip travel insurance covers one off trips for both business and pleasure.

Unlike most of our competitors Alpha Travel Insurance does not provide you with a range of cover options, where the protection you buy is dependent upon how much you are prepared to pay! We fear that this can lead to people travelling with inadequate insurance cover because they have not understood what they have sacrificed in order to reduce their costs. Alpha single trip travel insurance provides you with one comprehensive level of cover and the premium you pay for that cover will vary depending on the level of excess you are prepared to accept. An excess is the amount that you are prepared to contribute towards a claim. Follow this link to see just how simple it is and to compare travel premiums

All Alpha policies benefit from the following:

  • A choice of excess, £50, £60 or £100;
  • The facility of buying your travel Insurance online - it's quick, easy, safe and secure;
  • A UK based call centre with highly trained staff who will always do what they can to help you.
Cover includes:
  • £10 million emergency medical and repatriation cover;
  • £1,000 cancellation, £500 personal possessions plus Legal advice and expenses, Personal Liability and Personal Accident;
  • 14 day ‘cooling off’ period;
  • Optional sports and activity extension.

If you are thinking of taking a gap year or travelling for a long period, check out our specifically designed Longstay travel insurance policies. If you travel frequently throughout the year then take a look at our Multi-Trip travel insurance.

Tips For Longstay Travel

When planning your Longstay trip, there are many things to think about and tick off the checklist. Ensure you don’t forget the essentials by checking out our travel tips below!

  • Check your passport’s expiry date

  • It is essential that you check your passport before you travel to ensure that it has not already expired, or due to expire whilst abroad. Always ensure that you complete this in good time, often months in advance, just in case you need to apply for a replacement.
  • Obtain the correct visa

  • If you’re planning on visiting certain countries while on your trip you will need to obtain a visa. There are many different types of visas for different purposes, such as working holidays, longstay and studying, so it is important to make sure that you are applying for the correct one. Always begin your visa application in good time, as it can sometimes take months to process your documentation and you may also be asked to attend an interview.
  • Luggage restrictions

  • If you’re travelling by air, take a look at your airline’s luggage restrictions. Ensure that you purchase a bag that is slightly smaller than the luggage dimensions as you will need to allow room for expansion when packing. Think about the consequences of purchasing souvenirs too – these will take up space and add extra weight to your allowance when you want to return.
  • Apply for an EHIC

  • If you’re travelling to any part of the European Union, always make sure that you have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) with you at all times. The card will entitle you to free or discounted healthcare in many countries within Europe.
    Please note that the EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance and does not provide medical treatment within private hospitals.
  • Check the FCO website

  • If you plan on visiting a place that has been issued an FCO warning advising against travel, be aware that you won’t be covered under your travel insurance policy.
