How to Stay Motivated

When beginning a new sports activity for the first time, it can be exciting and your motivation levels are sky high. Playing a competitive sport is exciting and a great way to keep fit. But for some of us, the temptation to skip the gym, eat the last slice of pizza, stay indoors when it's raining, or thinking 'I'll do it tomorrow' are all too common. If you're one of those people who want to be sports motivated but not sure where to start, take a look at our guide to help you stay on the right track!

Firstly it's important that you choose an activity that you are likely to stick at. It may sound obvious, but if you love the outdoors over the indoor gym, or if you're more of a team player than solo, you may find that simply choosing an activity that fits you better enables you to keep motivated. Why not take a look at our Choosing a Sports or Adventure Activity page for more information.

When starting an activity, chances are you're a beginner and surrounded by others who may be more advanced than you. This can make feelings of self-doubt kick in, especially if you fail to shoot a hoop or score a goal. It is important to remember that everyone started out as a beginner (just like you) and it has taken time, practice and of course, motivation to get where they are today.

Tracking your progress can be a fantastic way to focus on your current achievements. You may have an ultimate long term goal to work towards, but in fact having smaller targets to achieve on the way can be more motivating. Break down your big goal in to SMART targets: Small, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-efficient. Your SMART targets may just include simple goals such as practicing for an hour every day, but little by little it enables you to stay focused on your sports activity and work towards the bigger picture.

With all this motivation, it is important to reward yourself: this could be something simple as a bubble bath or watching a programme. Rewarding yourself for your achievements will fuel your motivation further.
